The Washington Presence (cont)

Thousands of contributors throughout the United States
and abroad made their donations so that the construction
of the Shrine could begin and countless others have
journeyed to pray in it. Bishops, clergy, and worshipers
from all corners of the globe have visited, making it an
international landmark and a common link for the widely
spread Ukrainian community. And in 1987, President Ronald
Reagan visited the Shrine to meet with its members and
others in support of a free Ukraine.
"...more than just another church."
With the independence of Ukraine, the Shrine has acquired
a new importance. Its symbolism now stretches across the
ocean and reflects the rebirth of the Ukrainian nation
spiritually, culturally, and politically. The Shrine's
presence in the capital of the world's leading country is
a national and international reminder of the dedication
of the Ukrainian people to faith in God, duty, and their
perseverance.
The National Shrine has become more than just another
church. To the Ukrainian faithful, it is a source of
religious strength, a vivid reminder of our religious and
cultural roots and a fitting symbol to all of who we are.
It is with this spirit that the final phase in
construction of the Shrine is taking place. The
continuing support of our patrons and benefactors will
assure its completion. In building the Shrine, we invest
in our future, our identity, and we build our trust and
faith in God.
